Mooresville Graded's draft 2027-28 calendar starts Aug. 4 and ends May 18, with a full fall break week. The school board votes Dec. 1; here are all the breaks.

Students in the Mooresville Graded School District would start the 2027-28 school year on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2027, under a draft calendar the Board of Education saw this week. The last day for students would be Thursday, May 18, 2028.

The calendar was presented for a first reading at the board’s meeting Tuesday, Nov. 3. The board is due to vote on it at its Tuesday, Dec. 1, meeting.

The details below come from the district’s Nov. 3 board meeting highlights, the superintendent’s memo to the board, the draft calendar and the board presentation.

The key dates

The presentation lists these headline dates:

  • staff start: Monday, July 26, 2027

  • first semester ends: Friday, Dec. 17, 2027, before winter break
  • last day for students: Thursday, May 18, 2028
  • graduation: Saturday, May 20, 2028

The first semester has 86 days and the second has 89.

There are three early release days: Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2027; Friday, Dec. 17, 2027; and Thursday, May 18, 2028.

The presentation says the fall and spring breaks line up with the breaks at Mitchell Community College.

Why it starts so early

The district said three things push the start date earlier:

  • how the holidays fall on the calendar
  • the need to fit enough instructional days into the first semester
  • starting on a Wednesday to allow a staggered kindergarten start

The district said the length of the school year and of summer break do not change. Students also finish earlier in May to make up for the early start.

It expects to present a 2028-29 option that starts and ends about a week later, as the holidays move back onto a later timeline.

The other option

A calendar committee of staff, parents, administrators and middle and high school students looked at two drafts. The committee held three meetings, according to the presentation.

The alternative would have started students one week later. It had a two-day fall break instead of a full week, and kept students in school through Dec. 21 before winter break.

The district said the draft now before the board was chosen based on staff and parent feedback.

Hours and weather days

The draft has 175 instructional days, or 1,067.5 hours. North Carolina requires at least 1,025 hours a year. The presentation says that leaves about 6.5 days built in for bad weather.

Across the year it has:

  • 11 holidays
  • 10 annual leave days
  • 19 teacher workdays, 12 required and seven optional
  • 215 staff days in total

What it means for you

  • Families planning summer 2027 trips: the draft brings students back Aug. 4. Treat the dates as provisional until the board votes.
  • Fall and spring travel: the draft gives a full week off Oct. 11-15, 2027, and March 6-10, 2028.
  • This applies to MGSD only. Parts of Mooresville are zoned for Iredell-Statesville Schools, which sets its own calendar. Our Mooresville schools guide explains how to check which district serves your address.
  • Questions or comments: the district lists (704) 658-2530 and info@mgsd.k12.nc.us.

The board meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Mooresville Town Hall, 413 N. Main St. In the nearer term, MGSD students have no school Wednesday for Veterans Day, and Tuesday, Nov. 24, is an early release day for the Mooresville Christmas Parade.
