Single-lane closures start Monday, Nov. 9, on I-77 near N.C. 150. Then traffic moves to the outside lanes so crews can build the new bridge.
Drivers on Interstate 77 at the N.C. 150 interchange in Mooresville will lose a lane at a time starting Monday, Nov. 9. Once the work is done, traffic will move to new lanes through the work zone.
The N.C. Department of Transportation announced the change in a news release Friday. It is the next step in building a new N.C. 150 bridge over I-77 at Exit 36.
What is happening
NCDOT said crews from its contractor, Blythe Development, will:
- close single lanes on I-77 near N.C. 150, starting Monday
- put in a new safety barrier wall and new pavement markings
- then shift I-77 traffic from the median to the outside lanes
- begin building the interior bents, the supports in the middle of the new bridge
The release does not give the hours of the lane closures, which direction is affected first, or the date of the traffic shift. DriveNC.gov, NCDOT’s real-time traffic site, had no listing for the work on I-77 at N.C. 150 when we checked Sunday morning.
NCDOT said traffic will stay on the existing lanes of N.C. 150 at all times while the bridge is built in phases.
The bigger project
The work is part of a $249 million NCDOT project to rebuild the I-77 and N.C. 150 interchange and widen N.C. 150. The section now under construction runs 5.5 miles, from Greenwood Road in Catawba County to U.S. 21 in Mooresville, the project page says. NCDOT lists 2030 as the completion date.
Construction began last year with storm drain upgrades, utility work and the relocation of traffic signals, the department said.
