Closures listed this week

These are NCDOT’s own listings on DriveNC.gov, checked Oct. 22:

  • N.C. 3, all lanes closed in both directions between Country Brook Lane and Johnson Dairy Road for construction. DriveNC lists the closure from Feb. 3, 2026, to April 30, 2027.
  • I-77, overnight Thursday: a moving closure of left, right and ramp lanes in both directions from mile marker 30.5 to mile marker 37, with ramps blocked, from 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, to 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, for maintenance.
  • Brawley School Road: lanes alternate in both directions between Citation Drive and Commerce Park Road for the widening. DriveNC lists that work through Aug. 1, 2028.

The town’s transportation updates page had no newer notice. If a listing has ended or changed, DriveNC is the record.

The big one: N.C. 150 and the I-77 interchange

NCDOT is widening about 15 miles of N.C. 150, mostly a two-lane road, from the N.C. 16 Bypass in Catawba County to just west of the U.S. 21 interchange in Mooresville. The section from Greenwood Road in Catawba County to U.S. 21, project R-2307B with the I-77 interchange (I-5717), is under construction and funded at $249 million, the project page says.

What it includes, from NCDOT’s project highlights:

  • A new, wider I-77 bridge over N.C. 150, with improved ramps. The town’s transportation updates page says the right lanes of I-77 approaching N.C. 150 were closed for good in both directions when bridge work began, with two lanes kept each way. The work runs in phases: new eastbound lanes, then westbound lanes, then a 160-foot-wide, 10-lane structure and removal of the old bridge.
  • A continuous flow intersection at Williamson and Bluefield roads, where left-turning traffic crosses at a signal before the main intersection.
  • Storm drains, utility moves, new signal locations and work-zone walls.

Recent closures have been at night. NCDOT closed the N.C. 150 ramp to I-77 North overnight in March and closed Talbert Road just north of N.C. 150 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on three nights in early June, detouring traffic by Corporate Center Drive and Oates Road.

Brawley School Road

NCDOT’s Brawley School Road widening (R-3833C) runs from I-77 at Exit 35 to U.S. 21, with sidewalks and pedestrian upgrades along the whole length. Construction began in June 2024 and was expected to take about three years; the estimate is $51.1 million, according to the town’s project page.

Other state projects

  • N.C. 150, Wiggins Road and N.C. 152: a $4 million NCDOT job to realign and signalize the intersections and add turn lanes on N.C. 150, built by NJR Group of Albemarle. NCDOT said in July 2025 it expected the work to be done by summer 2026, with daytime lane closures 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays in the later phase.
  • Linwood Road bridge over Coddle Creek: reopened June 1, 2026, after about eight months. NCDOT said in its reopening release that crews may return into the fall for vegetation and erosion control.
  • Rinehardt Road: since April, traffic between N.C. 150 and Rinehardt Road uses Cambrey Pointe Drive, a new alignment built by the developer of a nearby subdivision.

Town projects

From the town’s engineering pages:

  • East Center Avenue: a stormwater and street project downtown between North Church Street and Statesville Avenue, with a new Dye Creek culvert, bike lanes, a new water line and a walking link to Willow Valley Park and the Liberty Park greenway. The town expects it to be finished at the end of 2026.
  • Moore Avenue: the half block just south of Main Street has been a pedestrian plaza, closed to cars, since Nov. 18, 2024. The permanent design adds wider sidewalks and makes Moore Avenue one-way, heading northwest, between Main and Broad streets.
  • N.C. 115 and Langtree Road (U-6249): a town-managed intersection project on the south edge of town, in the state’s improvement program.
  • Timber Road extension: a developer-built road from Timber Road to U.S. 21, estimated at $18 million. The developer’s estimate was completion by April 2026.
  • Sidewalk repairs: a contractor is grinding down sidewalk trip hazards on town streets.

What this means for you

  • Plan another route around the N.C. 3 closure; DriveNC does not list a detour for it.
  • On I-77 at N.C. 150, expect two lanes each way and night closures through the bridge job.
  • Allow extra time on N.C. 150 between I-77 and U.S. 21, and on Brawley School Road.
  • Check DriveNC.gov before a late-night trip; most closures run 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
