In North Carolina the county values your property and collects the tax, including the town’s share. Mooresville homeowners get one bill from Iredell County Tax Administration, which adds the county rate, the Town of Mooresville rate and, for most of the town, the Mooresville school district rate. Questions about a bill go to the Tax Collector at 704-878-3020.

The 2026 rates
Rates are in cents per $100 of assessed value, from the county’s tax rates table.
| Taxing unit | 2026 rate | Who pays |
|---|---|---|
| Iredell County | 50 cents | Every property in the county |
| Town of Mooresville | 48.36 cents | Property inside town limits |
| Mooresville school district | 15.5 cents | Property inside the Mooresville Graded School District |
| Mooresville downtown district | 14 cents | Property in the downtown service district |
| Mooresville solid waste fee | $300 a year | Homes on town trash service ($150 with the elderly or disabled exclusion) |
All three tax rates are the same as in 2023, 2024 and 2025. The town rate was 58 cents before the 2023 revaluation, and the school rate was 18.5 cents. The town’s solid waste fee, the charge that pays for trash and recycling pickup, rose to $300 for 2026 from $204 in 2025, the county’s table shows.
What a bill looks like
For a home inside town limits and inside the Mooresville Graded School District, the three rates add up to $1.1386 per $100 of value. A house assessed at $300,000 would owe:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Iredell County, 50 cents | $1,500 |
| Town of Mooresville, 48.36 cents | $1,450.80 |
| Mooresville school district, 15.5 cents | $465 |
| Solid waste fee | $300 |
| Total | $3,715.80 |
The school district rate applies only inside the Mooresville Graded School District’s boundary, which is not the same as the town limits. Your bill lists each taxing unit by name, and Online Tax Services shows the codes for any parcel.
Due dates
From the Tax Collector page:
- August: real and personal property bills are mailed.
- Sept. 1: bills are due.
- Jan. 5, 2027: last day to pay 2026 bills without interest.
- Jan. 6: 2% interest is added, then 0.75% more on the first of each month.
- March: unpaid real estate taxes are advertised in the newspaper, with an advertising fee added.
Ownership is fixed on Jan. 1, so a seller still gets that year’s bill; prorating is settled between buyer and seller at closing. Vehicle property tax is collected by the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles with your tag renewal under the state’s Tag and Tax Together system.
How to appeal your value
The county’s values date from the Jan. 1, 2023, countywide revaluation. The county reappraises every four years, and the next one takes effect Jan. 1, 2027; the commissioners have adopted the 2027 Schedule of Values. Expect new value notices for 2027.
The appeals page sets out three steps:
- Assessor review. Send the appeal form and your evidence to the Assessor’s Office, PO Box 1027, Statesville, NC 28687, within 30 days of the date on your notice, or file online. The value can go down, up or stay the same.
- Board of Equalization and Review. Appeal before the board’s advertised adjournment or within 30 days of your last notice. The board first meets between the first Monday in April and the first Monday in May.
- N.C. Property Tax Commission. Within 30 days of the board’s decision.
Valid reasons: the value is not market value as of the revaluation date, it is out of line with comparable property, or the record card has errors. “Taxes are too high” and inability to pay are not grounds. Useful evidence includes a private appraisal or sales from the year before the revaluation date, surveys and photos of damage.
Tax relief for homeowners
North Carolina offers three homestead programs, which the county lists on its exemptions page. All use the state’s AV-9 form, filed with the county assessor by June 1.
- Elderly or disabled exclusion: 65 or older, or totally and permanently disabled, on Jan. 1, with income of $38,800 or less for the 2026 tax year. It excludes the greater of $25,000 or 50% of the home’s value.
- Circuit breaker deferment: for the same groups, caps the tax at 4% of income up to $38,800, or 5% up to $58,200, according to the 2026 AV-9 form.
- Disabled veteran exclusion: for honorably discharged veterans with a 100% total service-connected disability; no age or income limit.
What this means for you
- Pay by Jan. 5 and you owe no interest, whenever the bill arrives.
- The 2027 revaluation will change values; the appeal clock starts the day the notice is dated.
- Seniors and disabled homeowners who qualify should file the AV-9 by June 1.
