Last checked Oct. 11, 2026. Facts on this page come from the Town of Mooresville’s sanitation pages and Iredell County’s solid waste site list.

The Town of Mooresville Sanitation Department, part of Public Works, collects trash, recycling, yard waste and bulky items from about 15,000 homes inside town limits. There is no separate trash bill: the town says the service is paid through your property taxes. Iredell County’s tax rates table lists the Mooresville solid waste fee on the 2026 tax bill at $300 a year, or $150 for homeowners with the elderly or disabled exclusion. Call Sanitation at 704-663-7282 with any question.

What day is my pickup?

Type your address into the town’s Personalized Sanitation Map, click the marker and scroll through the details. It shows your trash day, your recycling week and whether your house is inside the service area. Houses in the blue or green areas get town service.

According to the town’s trash page:

  • Trash is collected weekly between 5:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on your day. The town suggests putting the cart out the night before, and asks you to bring it back in by 5:30 a.m. the day after.
  • Recycling goes in the 96-gallon blue cart and is emptied every other week on your trash day. The weeks alternate between “blue” and “green” weeks.
  • Yard waste is collected weekly, the day after your trash day.

Keep carts at least 3 feet from each other, mailboxes and cars, with the handle facing the house. All household trash, including kitty litter and food, must be bagged and tied. The lid has to close.

Holiday schedule

The town posts holiday changes on its website and social media and sends calls through its alert system. Sign up for those alerts on the town’s notification portal. From the 2026 sanitation holiday schedule:

Holiday Date What the town says
Veterans Day Wednesday, Nov. 11 One-day delay for Wednesday and Thursday garbage and recycling
Thanksgiving Thursday, Nov. 26 One-day delay for Thursday garbage and recycling
Christmas Thursday, Dec. 24, and Friday, Dec. 25 Thursday garbage and recycling move up one day

Earlier in 2026, Good Friday, Juneteenth and the Fourth of July brought no delay. The town also says icy roads can delay or suspend pickup until streets are safe. The 2027 holiday schedule had not been posted when we checked.

Bulk pickup

Bulky waste is picked up every week on your trash day at no extra charge, with no need to schedule, the town’s bulk waste page says. A separate truck collects it, and large loads can take three to five days.

  • Taken: empty appliances (refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves), furniture, mattresses, beds and frames, bicycles, broken-down cardboard, bagged clothing, grills of 75 pounds or less with the propane tank removed, lawn mowers with gas and battery removed, intact pallets, patio furniture, move-out piles and extra bags of garbage.
  • Not taken: auto parts and batteries, bricks, carpet, concrete, construction debris, dirt, electronics, mulch, rocks and tires.

Set items 3 feet from your carts and away from power lines and parked cars, and take apart swing sets, pool tables and basketball goals first.

Yard waste and fall leaves

The yard waste page asks for leaves and grass loose at the curb, not bagged, kept apart from limbs. Limbs must be under 4 feet long and 4 inches thick and stacked one way. The town does not collect mulch, dirt or anything a tree service cut.

Loose-leaf season is starting. The town said Sept. 25 that it is adding vacuum trucks and that crews collected 1,831 tons of leaves in October, November and December 2025. Have piles at the curb by 6 a.m. on your yard waste day, away from storm drains and 3 feet from carts, mailboxes and cars. Crews cannot come back for piles put out after they pass.

What goes in the blue cart

The town’s recycling page accepts No. 1 and No. 2 plastics, aluminum and metal food cans, flattened cardboard, cereal boxes, milk and juice cartons, mixed paper, junk mail, magazines and paperback books. It does not accept glass, plastic bags or film, Styrofoam, clothing, light bulbs, paint cans or yard waste. Rinse containers. A cart with garbage in it gets tagged, and repeat violations can mean no pickup or a fine.

Electronics, tires and hazardous waste

These go to Iredell County, not the curb. Bring proof of an Iredell County address.

  • Mooresville Transfer Station, 158 Macleod Drive: 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 2 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday; 704-663-5314. It takes electronics (fees may apply) and up to five tires a year free, rims off.
  • Household hazardous waste (paint, motor oil, pesticides, pool chemicals) is taken at the county facility, 354 Twin Oaks Road in Statesville, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. on set Saturdays. The next dates are Saturday, Oct. 31, and Saturday, Nov. 28; it is closed in December. Paint is limited to 15 one-gallon cans. Call 704-878-5430.

Small amounts of latex paint can be dried out in the can and set at the curb with the lid off, the town’s hazardous waste page says.

Moving in or out

New residents can request carts and sign up for alerts on the town’s moving page. Carts stay with the house. Homes outside town limits, apartments and businesses hire a private hauler.
