How to look up a score

The county links its Health Ratings for Iredell Establishments page, which opens the statewide inspection database run for North Carolina’s local health departments, filtered to Iredell County. Search by name or address to see the latest score, grade and inspection date for each establishment. The database was not responding when we checked on Oct. 11; if it is down, try again later or call the Environmental Health office.

You can also read the grade card in the restaurant. State rules require the card to be posted where customers can easily see it, and the owner is responsible for keeping it up.

How the grades work

North Carolina’s food establishment grading rule sets these bands, according to the state’s posted rules:

Score Grade
90 or higher A
80 to under 90 B
70 to under 80 C
Below 70 Permit revoked; the establishment cannot operate

Inspections are scored against the N.C. Food Code, and the county says it conducts routine inspections of every establishment the law requires it to inspect.

Method notes

  • A score is a snapshot of one visit on one date. It does not rate the food.
  • The county posts results in the state database; we link to it instead of copying scores, so you always see the latest inspection.
  • When we report on a specific inspection, we name the inspection date and score from the county’s record and ask the business for comment.

Opening or buying a restaurant

The county warns new owners of existing restaurants not to assume an old restaurant space meets current code: North Carolina’s Food Code has no grandfather clause for old equipment or finishes. Plan reviews for restaurants, food trucks and temporary vendors are filed through the county’s online permitting system. See also our building permits and zoning guide.

What this means for you

  • Look for the posted grade card, or search the state database before you go.
  • Below 70, a restaurant cannot stay open.
  • If you think food made you sick, call Environmental Health.
