Last checked Oct. 11, 2026. Sources: the N.C. Department of Revenue’s 2025-2026 county and municipal tax rates, the N.C. Mooresville’s three nearest neighbors that are incorporated towns or cities are Davidson, about 7 miles south, Cornelius, about 8 miles south, and Kannapolis, about 12 miles east. (Lake Norman of Iredell, about 6 miles away, is a Census-designated place, not a town.) They sit in different counties. Mooresville is in Iredell County. Davidson and Cornelius are in Mecklenburg County, with a small part of Davidson in Iredell. Kannapolis is in Cabarrus and Rowan counties. That means different county tax rates, school districts and property records for each.

What this means for you

  • Compare the combined rate: county plus town, plus any special district such as Mooresville’s 15.5-cent school district tax.
  • Mooresville and Kannapolis have their own city school systems; Davidson and Cornelius are in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Check every address with the district.
  • Figures below come from one year or one month for all four towns.

Property taxes

North Carolina rates are in cents per $100 of assessed value. These are the state’s 2025-2026 rates, the latest year the N.C. Department of Revenue has published for all four. The “effective” rate is the state’s adjustment for counties that last revalued property in different years, which makes rates easier to compare.

Town, county County rate Town rate Combined Effective combined
Mooresville, Iredell 50 48.36 98.36 89.41
Davidson, Mecklenburg 49.27 26.6 75.87 67.36
Cornelius, Mecklenburg 49.27 17.31 66.58 59.11
Kannapolis, Cabarrus 57.6 55.95 113.55 106.81
Kannapolis, Rowan 58 55.95 113.95 97.51

The state’s table leaves out special district taxes. In Mooresville, property in the Mooresville Graded School District also pays 15.5 cents and the downtown district 14 cents, and town trash service carries a $300 yearly fee on the tax bill, Iredell County’s tax rates table shows. Iredell County and the Town of Mooresville kept the same rates for 2026. Iredell revalues all property on Jan. 1, 2027. More in our property tax guide.

Homestead breaks are set by the state and work the same way in all four towns: the elderly or disabled exclusion, the circuit breaker deferment and the disabled veteran exclusion, applied for on the state’s AV-9 form with the county assessor by June 1.

Schools

Districts are the ones that cover each town; public high schools are the traditional district high schools with an address in the town in the federal NCES directory. Scores are the share of state tests at grade level or above in 2025-26, from the state’s accountability data.

Town District High school in town At grade level Growth Four-year graduation
Mooresville Mooresville Graded (65.2%) Mooresville High 60.3% Met Above 95%
