Where it is
The nomination says the district is generally bounded by Wilson and Caldwell avenues on the north, by parts of Smith and Bruce streets and Kennette Avenue on the south, by Lutz and Messick avenues on the west and by parts of Catawba Avenue and Shearers Road on the east. It lies on both sides of the railroad, southwest of downtown, and wraps around the old mill, which is itself left out of the district. Its streets include South Main, Spruce, Summer, College, Water and Brawley Avenue, which the nomination says likely honors Espy Brawley, who organized the Dixie Cotton Mill in 1906.
The houses. The nomination counts 651 resources, 550 of them contributing. Most are one- or one-and-a-half-story frame houses on brick foundations, three bays wide, with front porches; the common style is a plain version of the Craftsman bungalow. Lots are of generally uniform size and setback. The houses stayed in the mill’s ownership into the 1950s, when they were sold to the workers, the nomination says. The rest of the town’s history is in our history and landmarks guide.
